woodworking operator (wood machinist)

Who are they and what do they do? The woodworking operator's job is to produce wooden products or components (e.g. round wood, boards, laths, beams, panels, etc.).

What are the activities of the job? Receiving and warehousing wood and processing it on frame, belt and circular saws into sawn timber, lumber and other timber products or components (boards, laths and beams), treating unfinished products to preserve them, controlling pressure wood preservation processes using various chemical substances, controlling of continuous/automated handling, cutting and production lines for sawn timber processing, controlling continuous/automated log sawmills which may have sophisticated equipment and remote electronic controls to feed in materials and for waste disposal, work connected with packaging, loading and other dispatch activities with components and finished goods.

Where is it done and under what conditions? In woodworking shops and plants, where there will be noise and dust and some use of unpleasant chemicals.

What tools/equipment do they use? Woodworking machines, mills, drills, sanding machines and other machinery and equipment.

What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training or on-the-job training, fast reactions and a certain degree of manual dexterity.
