Who are they and what do they do? A tutor or governess teaches the children in the children's own homes. What are the activities of the job? Specialises in the education of children in their own homes either because the children are unable to go to school due to some problem or because the parents decided against them going to a school. Where is it done and under what conditions? S/he usually does his/her job in a closed space inside a house. What tools/equipment do they use? S/he uses the materials generally used in teaching: books, paper, pens, etc. What do you need to succeed? S/he must have teacher training, education to university level, and general knowledge of a range of subjects, since s/he must teach the whole curriculum normally covered by a school. A knowledge of foreign languages and specialised knowledge of educational theory and practice in infant and primary schools is valuable. You may progress into a normal teaching career. Patience, a ability and enthusiasm for teaching and the ability to deal with children are required.
