Who are they and what do they do? The doorkeeper's task is to guard the entrance to e.g. a building, of the headquarters of an organisation, store rooms etc.) or the entrance for pedestrians or vehicles.

What are the activities of the job? Guarding the entrance or exit of a building or organisation, especially in order to prevent unauthorised persons from entering or to prevent unauthorised removal of the property of the organisation, possibly guarding motor vehicles or other equipment, doing the rounds of the building or site and guarding them against theft, damage or natural disaster etc. - checking on the correct entry of visitors' or employees personal data as the enter the premises, possibly issuing visitor's labels or cards - reporting by telephone to employees if they have a visitor - transmitting letters or messages left in the gatehouse (or "porter's lodge") - informing visitors where to find the employee required, giving basic information regarding the activities of the organisation - keeping records of objects and equipment entrusted to them - possibly selling objects or publications, which are connected with the activities of the organisation or collecting fees for the use of the building or equipment or whatever it is they are guarding, and keeping account of the revenue. In some cases the porter merely operates in a porter's lodge or guardhouse.

Where is it done and under what conditions? In a porter's lodge or guardhouse or reception office at the entrance to a building, in the inner spaces of the guarded building or other premises. Shift work and changing weather conditions must be expected.

What tools/equipment do they use? Closed circuit TV, a flashlight, radio communication equipment, sometimes a guard dog, possibly a firearm, sometimes a telephone exchange.

What do you need to succeed? You need to be reliable, with quick responses, and a good memory. Basic education will be sufficient.
