Who are they and what do they do? The task of an auxiliary worker in water management is to carry out various activities aimed primarily at the maintenance or building of water management structures along watercourses.

What are the activities of the job? Cleaning hydraulic and other structures along watercourses as well as cleaning the watercourses as such - felling and debranching trees, mowing grass (using mechanised mowers as well as scythes) and thinning of bushes - strengthening and stabilising river banks (by planting vegetation, for example) - in emergencies, carrying out activities to make watercourses and waterworks safe from flooding etc. - taking part in the maintenance of watercourses and related structures - various kinds of bricklaying and concreting work - measuring water consumption, flow rate and discharge - helping at manually operated sluices - working on bank fortifications, such as laying prefabricated elements, laying foundations, removing, laying and repairing the paving - auxiliary work during the repair of hydraulic structures and equipment.

Where is it done and under what conditions? At rivers, dams and other bodies of water and hydraulic structures. As this is usually out of doors you should be prepared for varying weather conditions, contact with water, with building materials containing various chemicals, with dirt, etc.

What tools/equipment do they use? Excavators, mixers, wheelbarrows, pneumatic picks, bulldozers and scrapers, conveyors, tractors, mowers and grass cutters, weirs, sluice gates and dams, shovels, mattocks, scythes, axes, power saws, etc.

What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed an apprenticeship or training on the job, physical fitness, an agile body, and quick reactions.
