Who are they and what do they do? A cabinet maker makes, repairs and renovates antique, or reproduction antique, furniture or makes original designs on commission.
What are the activities of the job? Makes, repairs and renovates specifically antique furniture, or reproductions of the same, or modern furniture of individual design; may also make decorative panelling for walls or ceilings, staircases, doorways, handrails, windows, stage props etc. S/he looks after and maintains any machinery and equipment used.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In workshops. There will, of course, be dust and some dirt as well as possible exposure to chemicals (used for treating, staining or preserving wood). May work for themselves or with other in a small craft workshop or in a larger factory or workshop employed by someone else.
What tools/equipment do they use? Various machinery and equipment, and fine hand craft tools.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, concentration, practical skill, creative aptitude and a sense of the aesthetic.
