Who are they and what do they do? The task of the art metalworker is to manufacture and restore metal objets d'art.

What are the activities of the job? Manufacturing basic metal products (nails, hooks, etc.) - manufacturing metal objets d'art of a utility as well as decorative nature when using all the craft techniques of a metal smith and locksmith, for example period-style handles, shields, coats of arms, ornamental grills, fire sets, period-style spiral staircases, latticed gates, etc. - production of metal sculptures - restoring metal objects of historical interest mainly by manual craft techniques - manufacturing decorative props and scenery at the theatre and in film - surface treatment of the objects produced or restored, for example covering with tin, chemical dyeing, etc.

Where is it done and under what conditions? Primarily in craft workshops, but also outside when installing or restoring objets d'art. The work environment can involve high temperatures, noisy and dirty conditions, or unpleasant weather.

What tools/equipment do they use? Forge tongs and hammers, hammer anvils, furnaces and hearths, forge presses, drop hammers, welding machines, metal-working machines, drilling machines, bending machines, and the usual craft hand tools such as files, tongs, saws, and especially their own hands.

What do you need to succeed? You need an apprenticeship, manual skill, aesthetic awareness, inventiveness and creative skills, a technical inclination, physical fitness, and spatial imagination.
