furnace operator

Who are they and what do they do? The furnace operator prepares and loads metal and other raw materials and additives into the foundry furnaces and controls the process of melting, tapping and pouring of the molten material. May be described by a title that relates to the type or furnace used - e.g. electric arc furnace operator, etc. May also be known as a melter.

What are the activities of the job? Prepares and controls the process of melting, tapping and pouring of alloys (steel, carbon steel, non-ferrous alloys). Loads the raw materials into the furnace, controls the furnace heat e.g. by adjusting valves to alter the flow of air, fuel, water, electricity etc.

Where is it done and under what conditions? In a foundry by a furnace, which can also be dirty with chemical substances and high temperatures.

What tools/equipment do they use? Various types of foundry furnace and their electrical control systems, ladles, crucibles etc to carry and pour molten materials. Protective clothing may also be worn.

What do you need to succeed? You need an apprenticeship, ability to react quickly, fitness and your own hands.
