Who are they and what do they do? The power systems operator's work consists of handling of various equipment for power generation and distribution and carrying out maintenance and repairs. They are employed by electric power utilities and by some large manufacturing facilities.

What are the activities of the job? Work at energy production and conversion installations in power & heat plants using measurement, recording, signalling, IT and computing equipment, operating reactors, turbines, boilers, generators and other related equipment in electricity generating stations and substations. controlling operations related to nuclear safety in nuclear plants (final cooling, special water treatment), controlling and monitoring equipment for the exchange of fissionable fuel, controlling and monitoring the machinery for securing safety aspects (compressor stations, cooling plants, air-conditioning systems and the systems involved in dealing with the containment of radioactive wastes and the coordination of their permanent deposition and storage, as well as participation in maintenance and repair work.

Where is it done and under what conditions? In various types of power plant and therefore working shifts and exposed, in some cases, to noise and dust.

What tools/equipment do they use? Various measuring, signalling and control elements of control systems, substations, boilers, turbines, pumping and water-treatment stations and other power-generation equipment, crushers, sorting machines, and the tools for their maintenance and repair.

What do you need to succeed? You need training to skilled craft level, self-discipline, accuracy, technical imagination and fast reactions.
