Who are they and what do they do? The job of a builder's labourer is to carry out unskilled work in civil engineering and building.

What are the activities of the job? Loading, reloading, carrying and stockpiling construction materials, and products, moving them around on a wheelbarrow, - preparation of mortar and mixing it in mixers according to a recipe, slaking lime, cutting grooves and holes, removing plaster, removing paving, floors and linings from different materials, dismantling supporting structures of bridges, furnaces and other demolition work, sorting material from demolitions, helping bricklayers and operating different building machines and equipment - simple painting and paint spraying, erecting and dismantling crane tracks- making foundations for floors, roads, pavements, roofs etc from debris, gravel, cinder, - taking part in placing, laying and sealing pipes, fitting slide valves, flaps and intakes in pipe systems, water reservoirs or sewerage systems, - placing sleepers or rail tracks on to a gravel bed, cutting, drilling and bending rails, assembly of track and packing sleepers, dismantling rail tracks and treating the rail track bed.

Where is it done and under what conditions? Mainly on sites where you must expect changing weather conditions, work at a height, dusty environments, and contact with construction materials containing chemicals, etc.

What tools/equipment do they use? E.g. mason's hammer, chisels, spades, mixers, wheelbarrows, power hammers, transport belts, pulley blocks, etc.

What do you need to succeed? You need on-the-job training or an apprenticeship, good physical condition, manual dexterity, ability to work in a team, fast reactions.
