The work activities include the preparation of optical parts, washing, cleaning, cutting, grinding, drilling and chamfering of optical parts and lenses, etching or colouring of gauge marks in optical instruments, chemical silvering of optical parts (mirrors), hand and machine processing of parts for optical components and silicon chips for piezoelectric crystal units by cutting, milling, grinding, honing, chamfering, engraving, etc., assembly of optical parts, correcting plane and spherical surfaces, preparation of glass gauges for high-precision measurements.

Where is it done and under what conditions? This job is mostly done in optical workshops and manufacturing plants of optical parts, lenses and instruments, where you can expect some dust and noise, and exposure to chemical substances.

What tools/equipment do they use? Typically machining and centring units, and grinders, fine hand-tools, gauges, meters, adhesives and the skill of their own hands.

What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, manual dexterity, accuracy, technical imagination, ability to concentrate at work and good eyesight.
