Who are they and what do they do? The material handler loads, unloads, handles, classifies, carries or carts about, cleans various goods or material for the institution or establishment of his/her employer. May also be known, depending on the industry, as a yard labourer, distributor, or loader.
What are the activities of the job? Loads, unloads, and moves materials within or near the plant, yard, or work site, doing a variety of different tasks: such as opening packages or containers, loading or unloading materials, moving materials and goods around the area with a trolley or forklift truck (if this is the principal task, may be known as a forklift truck driver), assembles crates and other containers for the items to be carried in, shovelling loose materials into wheelbarrows or other vehicles, sacks or barrels, stacking or labelling goods, and cleaning up an area afterwards.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In various workshops, storage areas or in the open. The environment will be dirty and dusty at times.
What tools/equipment do they use? Tools are e.g. forklift trucks, hand trucks, wheel barrows, cleaning agents, and various hand tools, etc.
What do you need to succeed? You need on the job training, and physical fitness - the work can be physically demanding.
