Who are they and what do they do? The job of a glass painter is the decorating and finishing of glass with various painting techniques and varied decoration materials. The job is largely confined to localities where there is glass production. It can also be run as a private business, however, so the glass painter could be self-employed.
What are the activities of the job? Mixing dyes and preparation of solutions - carrying out decorations of all types, e.g. flower motifs and ribbon decorations (landscape and animal motifs) by painting, printing, glazing, scratching with a needle, tapping with a diamond, etc., on all types of products - painting jewellery and products of a complex shape, e.g. butterflies and figures - painting Christmas decorations - finishing decorative glass using all types of painting materials (e.g. paints, enamels, emulsions, precious metals) - producing fine detailed paintings (landscapes and portraits) on various products - painting, cutting and sand-blasting unique glass products according to the painter's own designs or in co-operation with a visual artist.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In workshops and studios. Contact with dyes and other chemicals must be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? Working tools include, for example, brushes, pens, templates, spray guns, needles, brushes, screens, grinding, engraving and polishing tools, various machines, and kilns.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, manual skill, aesthetic sensitivity, exactness, inventive and creative abilities, good eyesight and colour sense.
