Who are they and what do they do? The job of a ceramic painter is decorating ceramic and porcelain products by many varied techniques.

What are the activities of the job? Preparation and use of decorative materials and aids for decorating - spraying through a template or through a combination of several templates - decoration with a brush or a pen (lines, ribbons, reliefs etc.) - stamping a complex motif or border by hand - etching with acid including the preparation of a product for etching, - richer decoration such as gilding - drawing details on figures (e.g. hair, eyes, nails, etc.) - producing more artistically demanding paintings, e.g. portraits, landscapes, animals, etc.) - tinting and shading of paintings - production of more complex compositions by combining several decorating techniques - decorating a painting by hand according to the painter's own designs - producing original motifs by graphic techniques on steel-printing plates.

Where is it done and under what conditions? The job is done in workshops and studios, and contact with dyes and other chemicals must be expected.

What tools/equipment do they use? Examples include brushes, pens, templates, spray guns, needles, screens, grinding, engraving and polishing tools, and various machines, and kilns.

What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, manual skill, aesthetic sensitivity, exactness, inventive and creative abilities, good eyesight and colour sense.
