Who are they and what do they do? The information assistant/receptionist gives basic information regarding the activities of the organisation to visitors.
What are the activities of the job? Informs callers where to find departments or employees wanted, distributes publicity leaflets and booklets about the organisation, negotiates visits to individual employees, shows visitors around and checks arrivals and departures and makes entries in the book of visitors.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Behind a counter, at the reception desk.
What tools/equipment do they use? The main tool used is the telephone, but also any information leaflets or handouts about the organisation and other paper-based directories of its employees. The receptionist may also have access to a computerised information system.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed high school, have the ability to deal with people, occasionally using foreign languages.
