Who are they and what do they do? Petroleum, and chemical process operators monitor and operate petroleum, and petrochemical plants and monitor, adjust and maintain processing units and equipment in these plants.

What are the activities of the job? Controlling crude oil processing as a whole as well as separate pieces of equipment. May take samples, carry out tests, adjust equipment, write records, and generally monitor the processes involved. He/she also does basic maintenance work on the production equipment used.

Where is it done and under what conditions? This work is done in oil refineries and chemical plants, where exposure to chemical substances and to high temperatures must be expected.

What tools/equipment do they use? Various machines and equipment, automated production lines, automatic and control equipment and instrumentation.

What do you need to succeed? Basic qualifications for this job are education to skilled craft level and ability to react quickly.
