Who are they and what do they do? The blast-furnaceman/woman prepares and mixes raw materials and additives for the production of steel and iron alloys.

What are the activities of the job? Sets up, prepares and adjusts machinery to carry out various steps in the overall mineral ore or metal processing operation. He/she does tapping operations on raw iron, controls the flow of molten iron and manages its mixing with other additives as well as the method of heating.

Where is it done and under what conditions? This job is carried out in heavy-duty metal working shops and foundries and the worker is therefore exposed to a lot of dust, high temperatures, noise, and chemical substances. Shift working is also normal. Some operators may work from a separate control room

What tools/equipment do they use? Various smelting-furnaces, feed and casting equipment, conveyors, crushers, other machinery and equipment, incl. automated and control systems and their control panels.

What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, overall fitness and fast reactions.
