Who are they and what do they do? The mining electrician handling heavy-current equipment installs, dismantles, adjusts, inspects and repairs mining electrical equipment.

What are the activities of the job? Activities consist of common repairs and maintenance of explosion-proof electrical equipment in mines (circuit breakers, contactors, instrument boards, electromagnetic brake systems, mining telephones, etc.), the fixing and stripping of electric cables, normal maintenance and repair of mining lighting systems, installation, dismantling, adjustment and replacement of parts of machinery and assemblies (e.g. mining transformers, inspection of these and other mining machinery, controlling, and providing for, work in installation, adjustment, replacement and inspection of independent machinery parts, such as microprocessor control systems for extraction work or filling stations, and other mining equipment.

Where is it done and under what conditions? This job is done in the mining environment of underground and open cast mines. The working conditions can sometimes be difficult with the objects that are worked on being awkward to get at, a lot of noise & dust, changing weather conditions and shift working.

What tools/equipment do they use? Among the most regularly used tools are hand tools and instruments for electro-engineering work, testing equipment and detectors and lamp indicators, measuring and diagnostic equipment. You need to be good with your hands and quick on your feet, too.

What do you need to succeed? Basic qualifications for this job are education to skilled worker level, technical imagination, reliability, overall fitness and ability to react quickly.
