Who are they and what do they do? The job duties of an building technician/technologist consist in the preparation of the required building project plans or their parts, either for planning permission or to satisfy the building permit procedure. The job titles technician/technologist indicate different levels of responsibility and professional qualification. There are a range of different types of technician in the building and civil engineering industries.

What are the activities of the job? Such technicians usually specialise e.g. in structural engineering, road construction, engineering construction and bridges, water management construction, supporting structures of buildings, technical equipment of the buildings and so on.

Apart from designing buildings as such s/he may take part in the preparation of project plans for the building process itself. S/he also prepares a budget for the building project or a part of it. During the realisation of a building project, for which s/he has prepared the project plans, the technician may supervise the work for the owner of the project to the extent stipulated by the relevant contractual arrangements.

Where is it done and under what conditions? Mostly in the office, often a site office, but there may be work out of doors on the building site or during site visits, in some cases, depending on the specialism of the technician.

What tools/equipment do they use? Information technology is used more and more often in this kind of design work.
